At a glance

When something frightening happens, children often show it before they can say it: new fears, sleep problems, anger, or a child who doesn’t seem like themselves anymore. Those reactions make sense. With the right support, and with parents involved, kids can feel safe and steady again.

Overview

When something frightening happens, children often show it before they can say it: new fears, sleep problems, anger, or a child who just doesn’t seem like themselves anymore. Those reactions make sense, and with the right support, kids can heal.

At Layers Counseling Specialists, we help children and teens work through hard experiences at their own pace, in a space that feels safe. We see families at our Plano office and online across Texas.

Signs your child may need trauma support

Trauma looks different in every child. You might notice:

  • More anxiety, clinginess, or new fears
  • Anger, irritability, or big outbursts
  • Trouble sleeping, nightmares, or changes in appetite
  • Pulling away from friends, family, or favorite activities
  • Acting out what happened in play or drawings
  • Stomachaches or headaches, once your pediatrician has checked for other causes
  • Saying hopeless or unkind things about themselves

If you’ve noticed some of these, it’s worth talking with someone. You don’t have to be sure it’s trauma to reach out.

Our approach

We use approaches built for children and teens, including trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) and play therapy, blended with art and movement to meet kids where they are.

Therapy helps your child

  • Calm their body and feelings: learning to settle the fight, flight, or freeze response
  • Make sense of what happened: gently, and often without having to talk through every detail
  • Feel safe again: rebuilding trust in the world and in the people around them
  • Build coping skills: tools they can use the next time life gets hard

Helping kids feel safe again

We use approaches built for children and teens, including trauma-focused CBT (TF-CBT) and play therapy, blended with art and movement.

Calming the body

Children learn to settle the fight, flight or freeze response with tools that fit their age.

Making sense of what happened

Gently, and often without talking through every detail, so the memory loses its hold.

Rebuilding safety

We help children trust the world and the people around them again.

Coping for next time

Kids leave with skills they can use the next time life gets hard.

Parents are part of healing, and we give you the understanding and tools to help every day. Learn more about TF-CBT and play therapy. For adults with trauma or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), we offer Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART).

Questions parents ask about child trauma

Does it count as trauma if it was one event?

Yes. A single frightening event, like a car accident or a dog bite, can leave a child shaken, and therapy helps.

Will my child have to talk about what happened?

Only when they are ready. Many children work through it in play and art first.

Do you help with grief?

Yes. We support children after the death of a family member, friend or pet, including sudden or traumatic losses.

Do you work with foster and adoptive families?

Yes. Read more in Trauma in adopted children.

Can sessions happen online?

Yes. Sessions happen at our Plano office or by secure video from anywhere in Texas. Younger children often do best in person in our playroom.

Do you take insurance?

We are private pay, so nothing goes through your insurance unless you choose to submit it. We can give you a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement, and HSA and FSA cards work.
