Overview

If your child has been sexually abused, you may be feeling heartbroken, angry, and unsure what to do next. Please know that children can and do heal, especially when they have caring adults and the right support around them.

At Layers Counseling Specialists, Jessica Morales, LPC-Associate, provides gentle, trauma-focused therapy for children and teens after sexual abuse. She’s certified in trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) and trained in play therapy, and she works with children and their parents together at our Plano office.

If your child is in danger right now, call 911. To report suspected abuse in Texas, call the Texas Abuse Hotline at 1-800-252-5400.

How children may react

  • Anxiety, panic, or new fears
  • Nightmares or trouble sleeping
  • Pulling away from family and friends
  • Anger, irritability, or mood swings
  • Shame, guilt, or feeling bad about themselves

Signs your child or teen may need support

It can be hard to tell whether a change is a phase or a sign of something more. You might notice:

  • Fear of being alone with certain people or in certain places
  • Nightmares, trouble sleeping, or bedwetting
  • Sudden mood changes or pulling away from things they used to enjoy
  • Acting much younger than their age
  • Talking about their body as “bad” or dirty
  • Sexual behavior or knowledge that seems beyond their age

And sometimes the sign is in you: feeling overwhelmed and unsure how to help or what to say. That’s a very normal place to be, and we can help with that too.

Our approach

Healing starts with safety. We use TF-CBT and play therapy, moving at your child’s pace and never pushing them to share before they’re ready.

Therapy helps your child

  • Feel safe again: in their body, at home, and in the therapy room
  • Work through what happened gently: at their own pace, with play, art, and talk, once coping skills are in place
  • Let go of shame: understanding that what happened was not their fault
  • Manage big feelings: tools for fear, anxiety, and anger
  • Trust again: rebuilding healthy boundaries and relationships

Parents are part of the work too. In TF-CBT, a safe caregiver joins sessions to learn how to support their child and to practice the same coping skills at home.
