At Layers Counseling Specialists, we provide SPACE — Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions — a parent-based treatment for childhood anxiety, OCD, and ARFID developed at the Yale Child Study Center. SPACE is unique: parents attend the sessions, not the child. If your child is anxious, stuck in OCD rituals, eating only a handful of foods, or refusing therapy altogether, SPACE gives you the tools to create real change at home. Serving Plano, Frisco, and Allen since 2023, we offer compassionate, expert care for families navigating childhood anxiety and related disorders.

SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) is an evidence-based treatment for childhood anxiety disorders and OCD, developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Study Center — with a specialized adaptation, SPACE-ARFID, for children with Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder. Unlike traditional child therapy, SPACE works entirely through parents. You'll learn to respond to your child's anxiety with both support and confidence — validating how hard things feel while expressing trust in their ability to cope — and to gradually reduce the "accommodations" that unintentionally keep anxiety in charge.
Family accommodation is one of the most common — and most exhausting — patterns we see in North Texas households. Many of our Plano-area parents describe:
The good news? You don't have to wait for your child to be ready. Research shows SPACE reduces child anxiety as effectively as child-focused CBT — by changing what parents do.
We use the structured, research-backed SPACE protocol to help parents shift from accommodating anxiety to confidently supporting their child:
You'll learn the core SPACE skill: responding to anxious moments with statements that combine acceptance ("I know this feels really scary") with confidence ("and I know you can handle it"). This balance — not reassurance, not pressure — is what helps anxious kids build genuine resilience.
Together, we identify exactly how anxiety has reshaped your family's routines — the reassurance, the avoidance, the workarounds. Then we choose one target at a time and create a clear, gradual plan to reduce it, so your child learns they can cope without the accommodation.
Children often protest when accommodations change — and SPACE prepares you for it. We coach you through scripts, written announcements, and strategies for handling distress, escalation, and difficult moments without giving in or escalating conflict.
Every SPACE treatment plan includes:
✓ A personalized family accommodation map
✓ One clear accommodation target at a time
✓ Scripts and supportive statements tailored to your child
✓ Weekly parent coaching — no child attendance required
This approach empowers parents to become the agents of change — and helps children discover, through experience, that they're stronger than their anxiety.

At Layers Counseling Specialists, SPACE is thoughtfully adapted to each family's unique needs:
Whether your child struggles with separation anxiety, social anxiety, phobias, panic, or generalized worry, SPACE equips you to respond in ways that build courage instead of feeding avoidance — at bedtime, before school, and everywhere anxiety shows up.
OCD pulls families into its rituals — answering reassurance questions, participating in compulsions, avoiding "contaminated" items. SPACE helps you step out of the OCD cycle while staying warmly connected to your child, and pairs powerfully with ERP when your child is ready for their own treatment.
When a child eats only a small list of "safe" foods, mealtimes can take over family life — separate dinners, packed backup meals, skipped birthday parties and restaurants. Using the SPACE-ARFID adaptation, we help you reduce food-related accommodations and respond supportively to mealtime distress, so your child can gradually build flexibility around eating. SPACE-ARFID complements our practice's individual ARFID treatment beautifully.
Some children flatly refuse therapy — and that's exactly who SPACE was designed for. Because parents are the ones attending sessions, your child never has to agree to treatment for treatment to work.
Why Choose Our Plano Practice?

SPACE isn't a standalone offering for us — it's part of a practice built around anxiety, OCD, and ARFID. Our SPACE-trained clinicians work alongside ERP and ARFID specialists, which means your family's parent-based work and your child's individual treatment (now or in the future) live under one roof.
We understand the pressures facing Plano, Frisco, and Collin County families — competitive academics, packed activity schedules, and high-achieving households where anxiety hides in plain sight. Your accommodation-reduction plan is built around your real routines: school mornings, carpool, dinner tables, and bedtime.
