A little about me

Hi, I'm Alesha. I help neurodivergent kids and teens feel understood, and I help their parents feel less alone.

Maybe your child holds it together all day at school, then falls apart the minute they get in the car. Maybe a scratchy shirt, a loud room, or a change in plans can send the whole evening sideways. Maybe your teen is tired of hearing "just focus" or "try harder" and has started to believe something is wrong with them. You're doing your best, and you might be worn out from explaining your child to everyone around you. Your child isn't broken, and you're not doing it wrong.

During my counseling training, I completed internships in elementary, middle, and high schools. I saw how often neurodivergent kids get called defiant, lazy, or difficult when really their nervous system was overwhelmed or they needed things explained a different way. I also saw how much changed when one adult took the time to understand them. That's the adult I want to be for your child.

What my time in schools taught me

  • A meltdown usually isn't bad behavior. It's a child who has run out of ways to cope.
  • Many kids work hard to fit in all day, and home is the safe place where it finally comes out.
  • Kids thrive when their interests, sensory needs, and pace are respected.
  • Parents often feel judged, when what they really need is a partner.

Who I work with

  • Autistic kids and ADHDers who struggle with big emotions, transitions, sensory overload, or friendships, with or without a formal diagnosis
  • Kids and teens working through anxiety, low self esteem, or life changes
  • Kids who struggle to put feelings into words and do better with play or creative ways of communicating
  • Parents who want practical support for what's happening at home
  • Young adults who want a warm, accepting space to be themselves

My approach to therapy

Alesha Mizeur, LPC-Associate, play therapist for neurodivergent kids and teens at Layers Counseling Specialists in Plano, Texas

My approach is person centered, which means I meet your child where they are and follow their lead. In my office, your child can move, fidget, sit on the floor, or take a break whenever they need to. They don't have to make eye contact or sit still to be doing therapy. And if they love dinosaurs, trains, or a favorite video game, that comes into the room with us.

For kids, therapy with me looks a lot like play, and that's on purpose. Play is how children make sense of their world. Approaches I use include:

Child Centered Play Therapy: Your child leads the play while I follow, helping them work through feelings and build confidence in a way that feels natural.

AutPlay Therapy: An approach built for autistic and neurodivergent kids. It uses play and parent involvement to build skills like managing big feelings, handling transitions, and connecting with others.

Sandtray therapy: Kids and teens build scenes in a tray of sand using small figures. It gives them a way to show what's going on inside without needing the words.

For teens and young adults, I bring in creative, hands on activities, so they don't have to sit across from an adult and talk the whole time.

I also partner closely with parents. We'll talk about the real moments, like hard mornings, homework battles, and bedtime, and you'll leave with tools that fit your child.

More than just your therapist

Outside the therapy room, I'm usually spending time with my fiancé, my family, and my pets. I have three dogs and two cats, so life is never boring! I recently moved to Texas from Illinois, and I love trying new places around Dallas, being outdoors, traveling, and getting lost in a good book. I also have a soft spot for anything pink, cute, and a little bit sparkly.

My friends would describe me as caring, trustworthy, and fun, and I bring all three into every session. Most of all, I want every child and family I work with to know they are worthy of being heard, understood, and accepted exactly as they are.

If you're not sure where to start, I offer a free 15 minute consultation. It's a chance to share what's been going on, ask questions, and see if I feel like the right fit for your family.
